The speculations and leaks are over. Toyota has launched the Toyota Camry Hybrid in India today. The Camry Hybrid has been launched at Rs. 29.75 Lakh ex-showroom Delhi. The Camry Hybrid becomes India’s first locally manufactured Hybrid car. It delivers a mileage of 19.61 KMPL which is the best in segment mileage delivered by a large sedan. Being frugal does not mean that it is not powerful as it puts out a total of 205 PS peak power using a 2.5-litre belt-less petrol engine and an electric motor. It uses and electronically controlled CVT or E-CVT automatic transmission system for a comfortable drive. The Camry Hybrid is being manufactured at Bidai near Bangalore in Karnataka.

It uses Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy system which uses intelligent computerized logic to select between the electric motor or petrol engine to deliver the best fuel economy and power output. The car also uses the re-generative braking technology in which some of the power of the motion is given back to the battery when the brakes are applied. In terms of comfort features also, it offers some very fine luxuries like the power reclining seats, rear armrest with electric controls for power sun-shades for rear windshield, audio system and climate control. It also offers 3 zone climate control which allows to use different settings for driver, passenger as well as rear passenger.

There is talk on the interweb that Toyota India is considering launching or revealing the 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid in India in September 2013. Pre-launch events of the car will be held sometime in August 2013, and the launch or reveal should happen within a month after that.

The Camry hybrid could be locally assembled in India to keep the costs down, the Camry is brought to India in completely-knocked-down (CKD) units anyway, and the hybrid could follow suit. The price will be high though, it is estimated to cost about Rs. 35 lakh. The regular Camry costs Rs. 24.51 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Under the hood the 2.5 litre, the 178 BHP/233 Nm petrol motor will be complimented by an electric motor which could boost the maximum power output to 200 BHP and the maximum torque to 500 Nm! But the hybrid system is there to save fuel rather than increase the performance from the car, in the US the car delivers about 18 KMPL on the highway. The figures in India would differ though.

We are pretty excited that Toyota is considering launching the Camry Hybrid in India, it will give a the company an advantage when the Indian government finally implements the NEMMP. The launch could also pave the way for the introduction of more powerful, but cleaner cars in India.

Toyota, the name we relate with high quality cars, has been going through a slightly rough patch in India of late, but the company is a resilient one. It wants to capture unexplored segments and the segment it has chosen is the hybrid-car segment. The car chosen for the offensive is the Toyota Camry, the company’s flagship sedan. We can tell you this with confidence because the 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid has already touched down on Indian shores and is being tested as we speak.

The word on the street is that Toyota is considering bringing the Camry Hybrid to India pretty soon. And by that, we mean September 2013. The possible reasoning behind this might just be the fact that the company wants to have a first-mover advantage when the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan starts operating. Estimates have stated that the NEMMP would result in around 18% of the vehicles being sold in India being the hybrids.

A Team-BHP member has spotted the Camry Hybrid being tested in India and the hybrid variant gets subtle differentiating elements to set it apart form the standard car. As you can see from the photo above, it features a slightly tweaked front grille and headlights. The car could very well be manufactured in India seeing the fact that the petrol powered Camry is manufactured in India too. The car was spotted near the company’s Karnataka facility.

The Camry Hybrid is already on sale in the Thai market. The car in Thailand is propelled by a 2.5 litre petrol motor developing 200BHP. The petrol engine is complemented by an electric motor, and it will be a front wheel drive unit.

Expect it to cost north of Rs.30 lakhs for sure, probably in the range of Rs.35-40 lakhs. Going green does not come cheap, does it?
